FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Columbia—Philip Porter, Administrator/Consumer Advocate is announcing that the state competition for “LifeSmarts….The Ultimate Consumer Challenge,” will be held, Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, 4201 North Main Street in Reinartz Hall (parking is located on Wildwood Avenue). The competition begins at 10:00am. Porter says that LifeSmarts is a fun, creative and exciting way to learn about consumer and marketplace issues through a game show format. He also stated that LifeSmarts complements the existing school curriculum and offers students of all backgrounds and abilities an opportunity to develop skills in the areas of personal finance, health and safety, technology, environment and consumer rights and responsibilities. Eight South Carolina teams participated in the online competition, which ended January 25, 2002. These teams represented schools and clubs from Bennettsville, Iva, Greenville, Darlington, Saluda and Dillon. As a result of the online competition, the four finalist teams include: Marlboro County 4-H; Trinity Collegiate School-Darlington; Saluda County 4-H; and Dillon High School. The winning team will travel to Arlington, Virginia, April 13-16, 2002 to compete nationally.
